Context

My focus is FLOWERS and springtime and I want to capture the beauty of flowers and nature through photography. In my initial research I have been inspired by shadow and light through water (fine art photography). I am going to explore three different methods of photographing flowers

  1. Close-up photos of flowers

  2. Flowers underwater

  3. The evolution of blossom over time

Once I have taken these photographs I will select my final pieces from one of the listed methods.

Requirements

The deadline for my project is 27th May 2022. My selected audience will be anyone who is interested in flowers and botanical, it will also be for the students at the college as it could be placed on the college walls. My work will be displayed in the end of year exhibition, I have a few ideas of how I could display it. For example, I could make a sketchbook and have all of my photographs presented in there and then have my final pieces printed large and displayed in a frame. Or I could just do one or the other of these ideas.

The Research Plan

For my primary research, I will be using experimental shoots that I will take. As I am exploring the theme of flowers and springtime I will try to be creative with my shoots and try out lots of different ideas. I would like to incorporate flowers and other plants into my shoots, possibly water, natural sunlight, or staged light.

For my secondary research I think that I will look at Magriet Smulders, Robert Mapplethorpe, Edward Weston, and Andrey Savin.  I will also make mood boards relating to my theme and use these for inspiration.

To make sure that I have considered sustainability in my research I will be using a digital camera for most of my pictures so that I don’t have to print until the final pieces. I do however want to use a film camera for some pictures, so then I will print some pictures that may not be final pieces. For ethics, I am wanting to raise awareness of cut flowers carbon footprint.

The Initial Ideas

The purpose/aim of my work is to show the beauty of flowers and spring to raise awareness of cut flowers carbon footprint by promoting natural blossoms from the UK. My ideas for this project came from pictures that I have on my phone of flowers. These were some of my favourite pictures that I had and so I came up with the idea of looking into cut and natural flowers.

The materials that I intend to use are flowers and other plants, water, glass tank, and both digital and film cameras.

I will be using a lot of processes for the film of my film camera, such as developing the film and then printing the pictures. For my digital pictures, I will be using photoshop to edit them.

Evaluation and Planning

I will be recording my reflective practice on my Wix website alongside my work. I will also be reflecting every week on what I managed to achieve and whether there was anything that I got behind on.

To evaluate my work I will be looking at what I enjoy about my work and whether it relates to my project, I will also be criticising my work to see if there is anything that I could improve on, whether it be ideas or the execution of the idea.
